DIY Face Masks: Dry Skin

Ingredients:

  • ½ ripe banana
  • 1 egg white
  • 1 tsp of honey
  • ½ cup of cooked oatmeal (uncooked oatmeal also works, however, cooked oatmeal makes the mask soft and easier to apply)

Instructions:

  1. Prep: Cook the oatmeal and while it’s cooling, whisk together the egg whites, honey, and mashed up banana. Add the mixture to the oatmeal and mix well.
  2. Wash your face thoroughly and make sure all your makeup is removed.
  3. Exfoliate with a gentle scrub (if it’s available to you)
  4. Apply a thin layer of the mask to your face, adding more layers to certain problem areas. Leave the mask on for 15-20 minutes.
  5. Rinse off with warm water, dry your skin, and apply toner and/or a moisturizer

Tip: Lie down so the mask doesn’t run down my face while it’s drying.

DIY Face Masks: Oily Skin

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup plain oatmeal
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • ½ cup apple (mashed)

Instructions:

  1. Remove the egg yolk and only use the egg white.
  2. Mix all of the ingredients to create a paste.
  3. Apply all over your face and let it sit for 15 to 30 minutes.
  4. Rinse and enjoy soft, grease-free skin!
BONUS TIP: If you’re feeling extra lazy and don’t want to run to the grocery store- egg whites alone are a great acne fighter. Simply remove the yolk from an egg and spread the egg whites all over your face. The result: firmer, smooth skin. This is also great if you suffer from redness or inflammation.

  1. Shake with ice and strain over fresh ice in a rocks glass.
  2. Add a lime wedge or a salt rim as you see fit.

Cinco de Mayo Recipes: Homemade Baked Tortilla Chips

TopShelf Clothes | Cinco de Mayo Recipes

Ingredients:

  •
6 good-quality corn tortillas

  • Neutral vegetable oil, like grapeseed or canola
Flaky sea salt

Instructions:

  1. Heat oven to 350 degrees. Place 1 tortilla on a cutting board; brush the top with a light layer of oil, making sure to coat the outer edges. Place another tortilla on top of the oiled one; brush the top with oil. Continue with remaining tortillas.
  2. Cut the tortilla stack in half. Cut one of the halves in half; cut each of those halves in half again, forming wedges. Repeat with other side. This will give you eight stacks of tortilla wedges.
  3. Arrange wedges un-oiled sides down in a single layer on the lightly oiled baking trays. A little overlapping is fine, but don’t overlap too much or they won’t crisp. Sprinkle with a pinch or two of salt.
  4. Bake, 8-12 minutes. Check at 8 minutes; rotate the pans. The chips are done when the edges are crisp and dry and slightly lifted from the tray.
  5. Remove trays from the oven; let cool slightly. As they cool, the chips will continue to crisp all the way through. Test one, and if it isn’t as crisp as you would like, return the trays to the oven for another 2 or 3 minutes.

Note: If you’re not eating the baked chips right away, store in an airtight plastic bag or container. Homemade chips are especially susceptible to getting stale, so be sure to bag them up as soon as possible.

Trending: Top Performers at Coachella 2013

With some 90,000 attendees and multiple shows going on at once, Coachella can be a bit overwhelming. You want to see every one of your favorite bands but moving from stage to stage is a project all in itself. Last weekend kicked off the first three days of the famous music festival with amazing performances by veterans and new bands alike. With many performers returning to the stage for round two next weekend, we decided to highlight some of Coachella 2013’s best performances from weekend one.

Top Performers at Coachella 2013: Phoenix

TopShelf Clothes | Top performers at Coachella 2013

The French electro-pop group headlined Coachella 2013 last weekend with a performance that surpassed all expectations. On Saturday, Phoenix combined their classic indie-rock sound with acoustic covers and finished off with a guest performance by R. Kelly. While Phoenix and R. Kelly have nothing in common in terms of sound, it proved to be a successful collaboration that showgoers and music enthusiasts alike are still talking about. We should also note that Phoenix’s newest album, Bankrupt!, is expected to release on April 23rd, 2013. The album is sure to be a summer hit with its soothing yet bubbly electro-pop feel, one that we can’t wait to check out.

Top Performers at Coachella 2013: The Postal Service

TopShelf Clothes | Top performers at Coachella 2013

The Postal Service released their one and only album in 2003, yet have maintained a fan base ever since. The duo consists of singers Ben Gibbard (leader of the band Death Cab For Cutie) and Jenny Lewis (leader of the band Rilo Kiley). As the two danced side by side to deeply personal songs, they undoubtedly impressed crowds who came seeking their nostalgic sound. The two reportedly finished their performance with the words “we might see you again, we might not” as they left the main stage on Saturday (billboard).

Top Performers at Coachella 2013: Wu-Tang Clan

TopShelf Clothes | Top performers at coachella 2013

On Sunday, fans gathered around the Wu-Tang Clan’s stage to get their hip-hop fix. The show marked the 20th anniversary of the Wu-Tang Clan’s groundbreaking album, Enter The 36 Chambers. With classic throwbacks and guest performances, the group did not disappoint despite the sandstorm that unexpectedly hit. With the largest rap crowd of the weekend and every living member of the Wu-Tang Clan gathered on one stage, the group was clearly not going to let weather put a damper on their epic reunion show.

Welcome to Coachella 2013

Coachella Banner

Today marks the start of world-famous music festival, Coachella. Every year thousands flee to the desert for the highly anticipated music festival. The event itself is six days long, occurring over two consecutive weekends. This year Coachella runs from 4/12-4/14 and 4/19-4/21 with a lineup that mixes alternative, indie rock, EDM and hip hop groups. Among the bands at Coachella 2013 are famed groups Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Postal Service, and Jurassic 5 who will be reuniting after a six-year absence. With epic performances, music festival fashion and a peek at celebrity’s ‘dressed down’ style – who wouldn’t want to go?

Stay Tuned for Fashion

As for the fashion- we can’t wait to see what event goers have in store. Celebrities have been known to ditch their red carpet style in the past; sporting laid-back looks filled with fringe, breezy fabrics and ankle boots. This coming Thursday TopShelf will be listing it’s top festival outfits of weekend 1.

Stay in the Loop with Social Media

While we realize that not everyone who wants to attend can head hop a flight to the West Coast to attend Coachella 2013, there’s no reason you have to miss out on the fun. Refinery29 will be streaming the event live, covering everything from festival fashion to celebrity spottings. We also recommend checking out their instagram account as well as #Coachella hashtag as attendees submit their Coachella 2013 photos in action.

In the mean time, we’re taking a look at previous Coachella fashion as we eagerly wait to see what this year brings:
